Choral scholarships

The choir at Holy Spirit Clapham sing on a fortnightly basis on Sunday mornings, performing a range of repertoire including English Tudor music, European sacred music, and also a range of Russian sacred music.

Unique to Clapham, we also host a monthly Choral Evensong on Sunday evenings, where the choir sings a full set of canticles, responses, psalm and anthem.

The choir comprises a mix of semi-professional and amateur singers, and is led by Holy Spirit Clapham’s Director of Music Andrei Lebed, who is a former Cambridge organ scholar.

About the scholarships

Holy Spirit Clapham is delighted to be offering four choral scholarships (one to each voice part) starting in Autumn 2021.

These scholarships are ideal for singers with a background singing in Anglican church music who are looking to continue developing their skills on a regular basis, but may struggle to commit to a choir which performs more than once a week.

The commitment would be three services a month, consisting of two Sunday morning services and one Sunday choral evensong.

There will be regular opportunities to sing in larger (full choir ensembles), smaller groups (quartets and trios) and perform solo or accompanied repertoire.

 Remuneration and Benefits

  • Annual stipend of £360

  • Up to 6 fully subsidised private vocal lessons a year

  • Regular choir vocal workshops led by expert vocal coaches

If you’re interested, please apply by email to the Director of Music, Andrei Lebed, at musicdirector@holyspirit-clapham.org.uk, providing an outline of your previous experience.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an informal audition and chat. During the audition, candidates should expect to:

  1. Sing a piece of accompanied or unaccompanied music which demonstrates the candidate’s vocal abilities

  2. Sight-sing a piece of polyphonic music

The informal audition will also start with a brief chat about the candidate’s experience and motivations for applying.
