What is Baptism? Baptism is a sacrament, a visible sign of God’s love. For your child, baptism is the start of a journey of faith which involves turning towards Christ and becoming a member of the Christian family. Baptism of Children If you are not already a member of the Church of The Holy Spirit you need to check whether you live in the parish (click here ). If you live in the parish please contact the Vicar to arrange a date for your child’s baptism. Baptisms take place during the Parish Eucharist (10.30am) on the first Sunday of the month. Our parish is blessed with many young families so there is always a waiting list for baptisms. It is best to make your inquiry as soon as is possible. If you are not a regular churchgoer, but live in the parish, you can still have your child baptised as we believe that God’s love is available to all regardless of their church-going background. We hold baptism preparation classes for you to find out more about the Christian faith before you make a decision about baptism. If you do not live in the parish of the Church of The Holy Spirit and are not a member of the church please contact us and we will give you details of your parish church. Baptisms are normally carried out on the first Sunday of the month and always as part of the Parish Eucharist at 10.30am. This is so that your child will be seen to be joining the family of the Church and be welcomed into its membership. Godparents must be baptised themselves. During the baptism service the Godparents make the same promises on behalf of the child as the parents do, promising to pray for and support your child as he or she grows in the Christian faith. Godparents can be family members or friends who will take an active interest in your child’s spiritual welfare. Normally, a child will have at least three Godparents.
