The Church of the Holy Spirit has been a worshipping, praying community from
1913, when the Church was built. Since then it has occupied a central part in
the community life of the area off the Southside of Clapham Common.
The Church is a sacred place. A space where people come to
pray, to feel close to God. Visiting the Church of the Holy Spirit we hope that
you may sense something of the wonder of the timelessness of God.
The building has a strikingly light airy interior. In recent years we have
undertaken major structural work to secure this glorious building for future
generations. At the end of 2000 the final phase of the restoration project drew
to its conclusion. We now have a new room allowing more space for children, and
the provision of toilets and disabled access. Work has finished on the
restoration of the Organ and the whole project including the front access and
garden should be completed soon. We are grateful for the help of
the Heritage Lottery Fund and many generous individual donations which will
enable this work.
The building of the Church of the Holy Spirit, in a quiet road south east of
Clapham Common, was designed in Gothic style. It consists of a nave, chancel and
north aisle with the organ chamber over the two vestries at the east end of the
latter. A hall has been built against the east end of the church with its own
entrance in Hambalt Road. The church is built of brick with stone dressings to
the doors and window and steeply pitched tiled roofs. It was built between 1912
and 1913 and designed by H P Burke-Downing Listing. The church is listed grade
2.
